The National Savings Certificate (NSC) is a fixed-income savings scheme offered by the Government of India, primarily designed to encourage small savings and provide a secure investment avenue for individual investors. Available at all post offices across the country, the NSC is considered a low-risk and tax-efficient investment.
Key Features of NSC
- Guaranteed Returns: NSC offers fixed interest rates, reviewed quarterly by the Ministry of Finance. As of Q2 FY 2025–26 (July to September 2025), the interest rate stands at 7.70% per annum, compounded annually but payable at maturity.
- Maturity Period: The NSC currently comes with a 5‑year maturity period.
- Tax Benefits: Investments in NSC qualify for deduction under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act, up to a limit of ₹1.5 lakh per financial year.
- Minimum Investment: One can start investing in NSC with as little as ₹1,000, with no maximum limit.
- Interest Reinvestment: The interest earned (except in the final year) is reinvested and also qualifies for Section 80C benefits.
